Richland, Lexington County road construction info for week of June 3

Expect delays, nighttime lane closures and periodic lane shifts for a 10 mile work zone to widen Interstate 20 from Interstate 77 (MM 74.7) past Spears Creek Church Road (MM 84.6) in Richland County. Completion is anticipated summer 2014.

Expect minor delays, flagging operations and possible nighttime detours on Alpine Road (under I-20) between Faraway Drive and Polo Road in Richland County while ramp intersections are being improved and I-20 bridges are being widened / reconstructed. Completion is anticipated summer 2014.

LCSD to host car show

On Saturday, June 1 a car and motorcycle show will be conducted between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. at 1765-A Augusta Highway, Lexington, to raise money to buy equipment for the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Special Weapons and Tactics Team (SWAT) that the Sheriff’s Department has difficulty acquiring through the governmental budget process.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety announces a preliminary number of 12 people being killed on South Carolina highways over the Memorial Day holiday weekend from Friday, May 24, at 6 p.m. until Monday, May 27, at midnight.

Expect traffic delays on May 25 due to Jailbreak 5-K Run

On Saturday, May 25, motorists will experience traffic delays on roads near the Lexington County James R. Metts Law Enforcement Complex, 521 Gibson Road, Lexington, between 6:30 a.m. and 10 a.m. during the seventh annual Lexington County Sheriff’s Foundation Jailbreak 5-K Run.

Lexington County Sheriff James R. Metts said Gibson Road in the vicinity of the Law Enforcement Complex will be closed temporarily to traffic during the 5-K run. Motorists on other roads in the vicinity of the complex will experience temporary traffic delays during the race.

AAA: Low SC gas prices mean busy Memorial Day

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Low gas prices are expected to mean more driving for South Carolinians over the Memorial Day weekend. AAA Carolinas says it estimates that more than 443,000 South Carolina motorists will hit the road this weekend. That's 1.5 percent more than last year's holiday. AAA says South Carolina's average gas price is $3.24 a gallon, the lowest in the country.

Senior hunger target of auto maker, SC's McConnell

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Lt. Gov. Glenn McConnell, the state's future leaders and the Honda Motor Co. are targeting hunger among the state's senior citizens.

During a Statehouse event scheduled for Thursday, an effort called SOS, or Sustain Our Seniors, is kicking off. South Carolina, according to Meals on Wheels, has the second highest level of senior hunger in the nation.
