WKHS hosts 2013 Special Olympics

 

White Knoll High students Chase Goodwin and Savannah Terrapin light the torch at the 2013 Area 7 Special Olympics.

 

WKHS hosted the annual event at the school’s football and track stadium. More than 500 Special Olympic athletes attended the celebration and competed in various track and field events.  The event gives students with disabilities the opportunity to compete in athletic events, to build sponsorship and to promote respect and equality.

The Lexington High Economics and Finance Challenge Teams won at the S.C. State Economics and Finance Challenge.

 

The LHS Economics team won the S.C. State Economics Challenge on May 4, 2013 at the Darla Moore School of Business located at the University of South Carolina. The Economics team includes LHS students Brian Farchione, Annie Hu, Angella Jiang and WKHS student Alfred Wong.

Lexington One names Howell WKHS athletic director and football coach

— At the April 9, 2013 special called board meeting of the Lexington County School District One Board of Trustees, the board approved the administration’s recommendation to hire Anthony Dean Howell as athletic director and varsity head football coach for White Knoll High School for the 2013–2014 school year.

 

Howell, who has 17 years of coaching experience, currently serves as head football coach at A.C. Flora High School in Richland One. He replaces Gordon Walters who recently announced that he has accepted a position at Waccamaw High School on Pawleys Island.

Frank and Anya Martin To Host Inaugural Coaches Versus Cancer Benefit

 

University of South Carolina head men's basketball coach Frank Martin and his wife Anya, are set to host their inaugural "Coaches vs. Cancer" benefit, the "B-Ball of the South," on Friday, May 3, 2013, at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia. Proceeds from the event will go to "Coaches vs. Cancer," a nationwide collaboration between the American Cancer Society and the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC). Several celebrity coaches are slated to attend to support the cause.

Lexington County Sheriff’s Department deputies will participate on Saturday, March 23 and Saturday, March 30 in the Player Assisted League, which enables persons with physical and mental disabilities to play baseball on a specially designed baseball field at the Pineview Dixie Youth Baseball Complex at 1250 Methodist Park Road near West Columbia.

University of South Carolina hockey players Mike Foster, Eric Patterson, Chris Clark, Andrew Swint and Ian Danahoo read to Saxe Gotha Elementary students in Erin Gagnon’s class. Ms. Gagnon’s first-grade class earned the visit from the USC athletes for having the highest participation in The Leader in Me at-home challenge.

 

The classes competed for the prize by completing activities at home that reinforce the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Children.
