Police: Man killed girlfriend, left body with 4-year-old | News
WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS)- A West Columbia man is accused of killing his girlfriend in December and leaving her body with the couple's small child.
According to Police Chief Dennis Tyndall, investigators have charged 30-year-old David Richard Walker Jr. with the murder of 26-year-old Catherine Carrie Banty.
Tyndall said the incident occurred at 226 Alexandria St. Lot #3 on December 10, 2012. The suspect and the victim lived at that location with their 4-year-old child, the chief said.
According to an arrest warrant, Walker strangled and beat Bandy to death. The murder happened while the couple's daughter was inside the home, the warrant stated.
After killing Banty, Walker left the little girl alone in the home with her mother's body, according to the warrant.
Investigators say a neighbor found the child and Banty's body about 24 hours after the violent attack.
A week later, Aiken County deputies stopped Walker for acting suspicious. Without provocation, Walker told deputies he was wanted for murder, the warrant stated. It was the first contact that anyone, including his family, had with him.
Deputies released him that day. Police later secured a warrant for his arrest on March 4.
Walker is being held at the Lexington County Detention Center, where he is awaiting bond.
