Community-wide cleanup day Saturday | Environment
WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - People who live in West Columbia are invited to participate in a community cleanup day Saturday.
The West Columbia Clean-up Day is October 19. A recycling truck will be parked at city hall to take electronics including TVs, laptops, monitors, microwaves, cell phones and other e-waste. The truck will be there from 8 a.m. - noon.
The city also partners with Keep the Midlands Beautiful, which provides volunteers who help with street clean up on major streets.
Last year the city conducted clean up days in May and October. During the May 2012 Clean-up Day, the sanitation department collected over 200,000 pounds of trash including 550 old tires. The October 2012 Clean-up Day netted about 90,000 pounds of trash including 334 tires.
The Clean-up Day events allow citizens to dispose of debris not normally collected by the city’s sanitation department such as tires, cans of paint, and discarded electronics. Some residents do not have the ability or resources to dispose of large, bulky items such as appliances or pianos. The sanitation department assists with removal and disposal of these items during the Clean-up Day.
To schedule a pickup of a large item, call 796-8006.
