53 illegal gambling machines seized on weekend raid | Crime
WEST COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Lexington County Sheriff's Deputies and SLED agents seized 53 illegal gambling machines from a commercial building near West Columbia over the weekend.
Sheriff James Metts says the video gambling devices were found Sunday evening in the building on Morningside Drive.
Investigators arrested 38-year-old Brinton Lee Motley of Lexington after the machines were found. Motley is charged with possessing a gambling device and is awaiting a bond hearing at the Lexington County Detention Center.
Arrest warrants accuse Motley of possessing the gambling devices and pieces, parts and components used to repair them. Sheriff Metts says the illegal machines included Chess Challenge II and Double Platinum devices.
On Sunday, a Lexington County magistrate ruled all 53 machines were illegal video gambling devices and subject to seizure. The magistrate issued an order Monday to destroy the machines.
Acting on a tip, Metts said investigators served a search warrant at the Morningside Drive commercial building and found the machines in a work area partitioned off from the rest of the building by plywood walls. A SLED investigator identified the machines as illegal under state law.
