Columbia, SC…With the recent tragedies in Boston and Texas, the South Carolina Department of Consumer Affairs (SCDCA) is urging consumers to be wary of scammers who pose as charities.

Scam artists follow the headlines and often tailor their fraud attempts to current events in an effort to profit from consumer kindness. As SCDCA saw with the Gulf Coast Oil Spill, we anticipate scammers will contact consumers in an effort to solicit money for phony charities to benefit the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings or West, Texas fire.

Report: Man burns kids with cooking utensil

The Lexington County Sheriff's Department arrested a Lexington man they say intentionally burned two kids with a cooking utensil.

On Thursday, officers arrested 36-year-old Nimesh Patel on two charges of child abuse .

The report said  on the evening of April 18, Patel abused two different children by heating up the handle of a metal cooking utensil and placing the heated utensil against their bare skin.

Report: Over 1800 gallons of fuel stolen from company

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of 1,897 gallons of diesel fuel stolen from a company.

The report said on April 15, officers responded to Hardaway Concrete located at 1740 Double Branch Road in reference to a larceny.

According to Sheriff James Metts, an unknown suspect entered the business and stole 1,897 gallons of diesel fuel.
