The first season has come to an end for Columbia’s Famously Hot, Surprising Cool new outdoor ice skating rink, Main Street Ice. Crews began dismantling the ice skating rink this morning and will be clearing Boyd Plaza over the next few days.
City Parks and Recreation officials are reporting that just over fourteen hundred skaters visited the rink over the last two weeks, bringing the attendance total for the entire season to over fifteen thousand.
“All in all, Main Street Ice has been a positive undertaking for the City,” said Jeff Caton, City of Columbia Parks and Recreation Director. “We were able to accomplish the goal of providing a wonderful outdoor recreational experience for area residents and for the many visitors that came, bringing increased traffic and excitement to downtown Columbia and the many businesses that are there.”
Plans and discussions are already underway for 2013-14. Now that the inaugural year is over, City officials and Park and Recreation leaders are looking forward to working together to bring new and exciting, bigger and better opportunities to Main Street Ice with the second season.
